This is the pickup that Pat designed for himself so its with a degree
of interest I loaded this baby into my Guitar.
Now, over the years I
have gone from one pickup brand to another in search for the perfect pickup to
match a particular guitar and as I am the Guitar Ninja, I have a vast supply of
Guitar weaponry at my disposal, so I have fitted this pickup in both a solid
Mahogany V (USA Pro V) shaped Guitar and a Maple Topped mahogany Single cut
(Dean Soltero USA) to really get a feel for this pup.
One thing that
strikes me about this pup, is the expressive quality it seems to impart on both
guitars. The push strident tone of the V seems to posses more harmonics than
ever. Just holding a note with a good dollop of volume and gain, results in a
rich harmonic explosion that reminds you why a guitar can stir the emotions
more than any other instrument.

Switching to the Maple topped Single Cut, I was utterly blown away by
this pickup. I have for many years used a popular make of pickup well know for
its fondness for maple caps. But this pup tames the spiky top end and flabby
bass that plagues many pickups designed for this purpose. The result is a
clear, mid prominent, harmonically rich sound that works with any amount of
gain or Power Amp style gain. Chords chime without bass notes over powering the
balance. Single notes sing into harmonic feedback (if desired) that actually
makes you wish the solo had just a few more bars in
it…
I would recommend that any rock or metal
guitar player with a Mahogany based guitar look no further than the Baker Act
to give their them the cut and life that this pickup imparts. However make no
mistake this ain’t no vintage offering. Its high output and lively mids
kicks that question right in the strap button. This pup will rock and roll all
night long, party every day, drink all your beer and demand to be used loud on
full blast baby!
At the end of this review I
expected to refit my old pickups. But I can tell you that this will not be
happening, as the pickup and subject of the review have now become part of my
own weaponry….Get in!!!!!!!!! |
