Review
By Mick (the beard) Staley of
Metal Gods TV Is this the event of the year? It has to be up there,
you would not get such a stellar line up at most festivals and all for 8 quid!
This was my first time at the Dean Guitar owners party and I had been
looking forward to it ever since I was asked to cover the event in March, when
we did a
Dean promo at
Hammerfest.
This has been a long running event in the US,
but still only in its infancy over here, although its going to be an annual
event from now on as Dean thought it was time to host one as the Dean owners in
the UK are growing by the minute! This was a chance for all Dean guitarists to
basically show off, and for
Dean UK to show how proud they are of their product.
I had the chance to meet old friends and also make new ones and a great
night was had by all. It was certainly a mouth watering event as great bands
were on the bill, which included, Wolf, Arthemis, Onslaught, Doug Scarett
(Saxon), and the jaw dropping exploits of the great Michael Angelo Batio.
This was no ordinary gig however, it was more like a gathering of
friends, and although the audience consisted mainly of press and people in the
business, the ones who did pay certainly got their moneys worth, rubbing
shoulders with the best. Everywhere you turned you saw people having pictures
taken with their heroes. Dean had also
organized the best raffle ever
with proceeds going to a childrens charity, with out of this world
prizes, the best being a signed Dean guitar. Whilst all this was going on,
bands and guest were strutting their stuff on stage.
The show was
opened by a new outfit called
Population Four, a band from Preston, who gave it
all they had and got everyone fired up for what was to follow.
Guardians of Andromeda were up next; making their
first live appearance with wizardry and magic really great stuff using
references from The Lord of the Rings and various other mythical tales, but it
really works well and the vocal talents of Phaelan are superb. You will
definitely be hearing a lot about these guys soon.
Arthemis drew the short straw having to follow such
a fantastic inaugural performance, but with new material from their
Heroes album they shone through and singer, Fabio Dessi would go on
to sing a rendition of Holy Diver as a tribute to Dio with all the
acts joining in.
101 Percent Pantera were on top
form and really got the room rocking with Pantera favourites with lead
guitarist Chris Jones, showing off the Dime signature guitar that can be bought
anywhere.
Michael Angelo Batio was next up and having heard
lots about him but never seeing him, I was really looking forward to the man
that first brought the art of the twin neck guitar. Michael Angelo had the
guitar lovers eating out of his hand, playing tributes to, Led Zep, Deep
Purple, Pantera and countless others. This was all made more remarkable as it
was all instrumental, but the speed of his hands and his trickery around the
neck of the guitar, just made your jaw drop and lap it up. I could have watched
him all night and advise anyone who gets a chance, to go and see him, maybe a
festival could snap him up, he would go down really well at somewhere like Hard
Rock Hell.
Wolf had to follow this maestro, but if anyone could
it would be Wolf. They started with stuff from the Ravenous album
with stuff from Black Flame, but the highlight for us and for them,
judging by the enormous grins on their faces, was the arrival of
Doug Scarrat (Saxon), on stage. They went on to
perform Strangers in the night and Princess of the
night with Nik from Wolf losing his guitar and becoming front man. This
is the sort of stuff you rarely get anywhere else, but all these guys are in
the Dean family.
Onslaught rounded off the night with yet another out
of this world performance, giving us their unique brand of thrash metal and yet
another fantastic vocal performance, this finished the night off with a bang.
This was a great event that gave us not only awesome guitar
performances, but some of the best vocals, collectively, that Ive had the
pleasure to witness in a long while.
DOA UK is now an annual event
and from little acorns, big things grow and if this gathers momentum, it can
become one of the must see events of the metal calendar.
